Panj means five and Takht means throne. Panj takhts are located at five Gurdwaras and are seats of authority for all the Sikhs across the world. They symbolize temporal activity and dispensing of justice. The first one to be established was “Akal Takht” (the Eternal Throne) that is located in the premises of the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar. It was established in the year 1609 by Guru Hargobind Ji.
The other four Takths are Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Takht Sri Hazur Sahib and Takht Sri Patna Sahib. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib is located in the village of Talwandi Saboo near the town of Bathinda in Punjab. In the year 1705 Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent nearly one year here and compiled the final edition of Guru Granth Sahib known as Damdama Sahib Bir. Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is located at Anandpur Sahib which is also the birth place of Khalsa. In 1699 Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the order of Khalsa here. Takht Sri Hazur Sahib located in the city of Nanded is where the tenth Guru of Sikhs left for his heavenly abode. Takht Sri Patna Sahib located in Patna, capital of Bihar, is where in 1666 Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji was born and spent his early childhood.
