Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world with a population of upwards of 30 million worldwide. However, the joi de vivre associated with Sikhs, is a direct fallout of the very exuberant and op nature of the faith which dates almost 5 centuries.
The soulful recitals of the shabads or holy verses from the Sikh holy book- Guru Granth sahib, is a perfect example of the unifying spirit of humanity as it combines the vision of saints and spiritualists from across the spiritual spectrum and moulds it in its own unique vision. The basic premise of One God and One humanity echoes through every page of the holy scripture. The city of Amritsar where the Golden temple represents the purity of the Sikh faith is visited by people from all faiths and has been the one unifying force of Sikhs and believers of the Sikh tenets worldwide. The enterprising spirit and the positive message of hope, devotion and glory of humanity form the underlying motivation for devout Sikhs worldwide. While the external manifestations and rituals and practices of the Sikhs give a special identity to them, the inherent spirit and secular message of the Granth sahib, as extolled by the Sikh gurus, finds resonance in the hearts of anyone who cares to read, hear or understand them.
Sikh Gurdwaras are found all over the world and are remarkable for the simplicity and sense of service that the local communities bring to it. ‘However, the joi de vivre, so often associated with Sikhs, is a direct fallout of the very exuberant and open nature of the faith which dates almost 5 centuries’.
