Just over a 100 kms south of Kolkata lies the Gangetic Delta called Sagar Island. This is where the Holy Ganges “Ganga” meets the Sea “Sagar” – thus called Gangasagar. Each year on the Makar Sankranti Day on the 14th of January, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flock to take a Holy Dip at this confluence, considered as pious as the Kumbh.
Story goes that Kapil Muni – incarnate of Lord Vishnu, wrongly accused by 60,000 sons of King Sagara of stealing their father’s horse (actually stolen by Indra and hidden in the Muni’s ashram), burnt them to ashes in a fit of rage. Repenting later, Kapil Muni accedes to undo the curse but only if River Ganga came down the mountains to wash the ashes. Bhagirathi Muni induces Shiva to order Ganga to flow to the Earth from heaven. 14 January is the date when Ganga flowed from the Shiva to the Bay of Bengal.
This is an year round pilgrimage destination. People come to visit Kapil Muni’s ashram and also enjoy white sands of the beaches.
